Scott Walker is quite simply a cultural icon. He is an American-born, British singer-songwriter, composer and record producer. He is known for his distinctive voice and for the unorthodox career path which has taken him from 1960s pop icon to 21st century avant-garde musician. Originally coming to fame in the mid-1960s singing orchestral pop ballads as the frontman of The Walker Brothers, Walker went on to a solo career balancing a light entertainment with increasing artistic innovations in arrangement and writing perspective. Since the mid-1980s Walker has revived his solo career while drastically reinventing his artistic and compositional methods, via a series of acclaimed and vividly avant-garde albums. The change in approach has been compared to "Andy Williams reinventing himself as Stockhausen”.Eimear McBride trained at Drama Centre London. Her debut novel A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing received a number of awards including the Goldsmiths Prize, the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction and Irish Novel of the Year. She occasionally writes and reviews for the Guardian, TLS and the New Statesman.

Pressestimmen

Verdict For fans of classic Hollywood movies and students of fashion, photography, and film. Those who want a more in-depth look at the personal life of this iconic Hollywood figure should read David Chierichetti's Edith Head: The Life and Times of Hollywood's Celebrated Costume Designer.BookPage, December 2010 “…scrupulously researched and handsomely assembled work… Filled with pithy anecdotes and never-before-seen sketches, Edith Head is the book for the costume design enthusiast. The Independent (UK), 10/4/10"There’s fierce, and there’s Edith Head. The name to drop in the golden age of Hollywood, Head was wardrobe consultant on Rear Window and All About Eve, to name a couple of classics. This stunning new book chronicles her 50-year career with sketches and archive material."Harper’s Bazaar, October 2010"It’s a must-have book for connoisseurs of fashion and film alike.”Donna Marie Smith, Palm Beach Cty. Lib. Syst., FL- Library Journal’s Xpress Review 10/29/10 "The golden age of Hollywood sparkled with glamorous stars and extravagant cinematic productions. Costume designer Edith Head won five Oscars and epitomized—along with actors she clothed such as Barbara Stanwyck, Grace Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn—the star quality of these heady days. Jorgensen (editor, Peterson's Photographic magazine) captures a behind-the-scenes look at the world and work of this dedicated, prolific artist. He includes background information and gorgeous color photographs and illustrations of the costumes she meticulously designed. While incorporating biographical information about Head, Jorgensen focuses primarily on the clothes, which perfectly personified the characters in films like All About Eve, Roman Holiday, and Sunset Boulevard.Films in Review “The book is a treat. A spectacular repository of on-set pictures of Ms. Head at work, plus her costume designs, and even a recipe for Chicken and Potatoes Casa Ladera (her home in the 50s), we get a full-bodied picture of her career . . . . fun . . . beautiful.” Sight & Sound“This spectacular one-of-a-kind book surveys Head’s work in words and pictures, bringing together rare, never-before-seen sketches, fabric samples, costume tests and behind-the-scenes photos from the Edith Head archives.” Guardian “[Author Jay Jorgensen’s] pictures are a revelation. He has excellent images of Head's designs, at their best when based on character rather than dazzle.” Rage Monthly “Edith Head: The Fifty-Year Career of Hollywood’s Greatest Costume Designer is a beautifully done book. The flow of the chapters, the extensive photos comprised of stars and the costumes alone are quite remarkable and create a fascinating read for Hollywood fashion aficionados.”

Underneath It All: A History of Women's Underwear

Pressestimmen

"Spanning several centuries in eight succinct chapters, Keyser's narrative takes a look at women's undergarments--their history, political and social implications, sexual and fashion statements, and complex evolution. Told in chronological fashion from Greek and Roman times, the account begins by explaining how underwear originated as supportive leather or cloth straps. Keyser is careful to clarify that the record-keeping was done by men, so modern understanding of the purpose of these undergarments is limited. Fabrics and materials used over the ages range from leather to latex, all in a dizzying variety of forms including farthingales, corsets, bustiers, and bras. Generously distributed throughout the book are images and anecdotes that contextualize the use of undergarments during different periods and in various countries. While the subject matter can be interesting at times--many women give up their corsets during World War I so that the steel can be used instead to build an entire battleship--Keyser struggles to keep a consistent tone. She often toggles between explanations of women's oppression and how later undergarments symbolized empowerment and self-expression. As the chronicling gets closer to the present day, the book shifts to discussions of body image, exploitation, advertising, unions, and celebrities and their influences. The brevity of the chapters may leave readers with little sense of closure or only partial understanding. A serviceable introduction to the history of women's undergarments, with some nuggets of importance and insight."--Kirkus Reviews--Journal"The biologist and writer offers a fascinating examination of an often under-explored facet of life--underwear. Undergarments for women have evolved throughout the centuries from simple, plain cloth tunics and elaborate corsets made with steel or whalebone stays and to today's contemporary bralettes and more. Historically, Keyser asserts, underwear is designed to create what ever is perceived as a perfect body. Examples are the Gibson Girl and today's Victoria Secret Angels. The book is divided into eight chapters that follow a historical time line and place the garments in perspective with the events and culture of the time period discussed. Chapters are illustrated and contain sidebars. The writing utilizes contemporary language and examples, citing Beyoncé and ad campaigns that challenge stereotypical views of beauty. Highlights of the book are the author's citation of women historians, writers, and entrepreneurs. A bit niche but endlessly fascinating, a great addition to nonfiction collections."--School Library Journal--Journal"Aiming at readers well past giggling age, Keyser presents a truncated but thoughtful overview of women's undergarments. Opening chapters focus, predictably, on history: chest binding for women exercising in third century BCE Sicily; loose halter-style garments in Han China 'which were said to remove desire as well as protect the heart and belly from disease'; caged underskirts, corsets, and bloomers over the centuries in Anglo-western countries; and current designs. Discussion includes the absence of under-wearing as well, and the recent discovery of an unmistakable fourteenth-century bra in an Austrian castle. More engrossing, however, is Keyser's discourse on modern lingerie and corseting as both a proud statement of sexuality and an expression of male fantasy and the conflicted attitudes toward glam underfashions that result. She makes cursory but valuable introductions to critical theory--Laura Mulvey's 'male gaze' and bell hooks' 'oppositional gaze'--which will point serious readers along a path to further investigation. Designers addressing the practical and aesthetic needs of transgender patrons are also noted. While not an exhaustive history, this is an engaging read for anyone with an overflowing underwear drawer and a useful resource for teens whose interest is more scholarly than sartorial. Color photographs, sources notes, bibliographies, and an index are included."--The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books--Journal"Corsets, open-crotch drawers, farthingales, chastity belts, and bullet bras all find their place in Keyser's revealing history of women's underwear, which goes beyond a mere accounting of fashion trends. As stated in her introduction, undergarments are closely tied to 'the complex interactions of gender, sexuality, politics, and body image, ' and Keyser incorporates these topics with unblushing candor. Early chapters take readers through the evolution of underwear's form and function, from basic bindings to lingerie and corsetry, noting that a lady's underwear options were dictated by her class and shifting beauty ideals--typically dictated by men. The Male Gaze is directly addressed in sections describing the rise of the 'bombshell' during WWII and Victoria's Secret, originally created to sell lingerie to men. Similarly, women's rights and the reappropriation of female sexuality (thanks, Madonna!) get their due diligence, as do modern companies supporting trans individuals. Inset boxes offer relevant trivia, while illustrations utilize iconic images of women who shaped, embodied, or challenged an era's notion of femininity. This multidisciplinary, discussion-worthy text reshapes how we view history."--Booklist--Journal3Q 4P J S "Women's underwear affords a natural subject with which to explore women's self-image and the ways the male gaze has shaped it over the centuries. This slim, attractively designed volume traces what historians have deduced about underwear's beginnings, and leads chronologically through farthingales, crinolines, corsets, and bustles into the disputed origins of the bra. A scandalous Victorian controversy centered on whether women should sew shut the crotches of their drawers. Keyser cleverly suggests that society feared women in pants. During World War II, the Betty Boop cartoon triggered a post-war explosion of sexualized 'blond bombshells, ' eventually cumulating in Madonna and Beyoncé. The modern facts seem straightforward, except for a seriously incomplete identification of Mata Hari. "All is not silken in the world of underwear. Keyser shows how lingerie manufacturing harms the environment and disadvantages female laborers in poor nations. She counters the increasing sexualization of tween underwear by presenting more appropriate lingerie lines started by women. Perhaps the more striking of the sidebars (many of which discuss men's underwear, including fetish wear) is a chart contrasting the Body Mass Index of the average woman with that of an 'ideal' woman over five past decades. Since the 1950s, the difference has expanded from 4 to 11 BMI points. Keyser concludes brightly that the twenty-first century marks the change from using underwear to control women to women using it for 'self-expression and self-adoration.'"--VOYA--Journal
